1st December 2008World Aids Day

Nearly 40 million people in the world are living with Aids, the majority of these in sub-Saharan Africa. The United Nations, in conjunction with the World Health Organisation, has declared 1 December World Aids Day. Today's young people are tomorrow's journalists, politicians, teachers, scientists and employers. Schools have a vital role to play in getting their students talking about HIV so that they can safeguard their own sexual health and help to break down stigma and discrimination around HIV.

There are lots of ways that schools can get involved for World AIDS Day:

2nd December 2008International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

This day marks the anniversary of the United Nations adpoting the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of Others, in 1949. Slavery still exists today, in a number of different forms, and over 1 million children are trafficked each year for cheap labour or sexual exploitation.

5th December 2008International Volunteer Day

A day to celebrate the contribution and achievements of volunteers across the world.

IVD offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions - at local, national and international levels - to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Over the years, rallies, parades, community volunteering projects, environmental awareness, free medical care and advocacy campaigns have all featured prominently on IVD.
