12th March 2010National Science and Engineering Week

 

National Science and Engineering week (NSEW) is a ten-day programme of science, engineering and technology events and activities held across the U.K. Science, engineering and technology are promoted through many different activities and experiments for people of all ages to take part in. 21st March 2010International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

 

The Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is annually held on the 21st of March to commemorate those who had been killed on this date in 1960 during a peaceful protest against the Apartheid pass laws in South Africa.

 

 

22nd March 2010World Water Day

World Water Day aims to raise awareness about water quality by encouraging governments, organisations and individuals around the world to actively engage in proactively addressing 'Clean Water for a Healthy World' (theme for 2010) through pollution prevention, clean up and restoration.  More information can be found on the UN World Water Day website.

 

 

23rd March 2010World Meteorological Day

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) celebrates this day around a chosen theme, and the theme for the sixtieth anniversary is ‘60 years of service for your safety and well-being’. 24th March 2010World TB Day

World Tuberculosis Day aims to raise awareness that tuberculosis still remains an epidemic throughout the world, causing the deaths of around 1.6 million people each year.  The 24th of March commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of the TB bacillus. 2nd April 2010International Children's Book Day

 

2 April is Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday and since 1967, International Children’s Book Day has been celebrated on this day to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children’s books. A different country member of the International Board on Books for Young People sponsors the event every year and decides the theme.  This year Spain is the sponsor country, and the theme is “A book waiting for you, find it!”.  Further information can be found at the International Children’s Book Day website.

 

 

7th April 2010World Health Day

 The World Health Organisation (WHO) aims to stimulate a global health debate on the global burden of disease and the factors causing this, and has introduced World Health Day, focusing on a different topic relating to health every year. This year’s topic is urbanization and health, with a campaign slogan “1000 cities – 1000 lives”. The WHO World Health Day website provides details on how to register for this event.

 

 

23rd April 2010World Book and Copyright Day

World Book and Copyright Day seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. Significantly the 23rd of April is also the anniversary of the deaths of the literary figures, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
